Labor
The hard-working men and women in many of America’s labor unions are working to protect their jobs, support our nation’s economy and increase our energy independence by putting people to work. The United States will see a 30 percent increase in demand for electricity over the next 25 years, and the nuclear power industry can contribute to meeting that demand by building new nuclear power plants. These new plants will stimulate billions of dollars in economic activity for the manufacturing sector and create thousands of high-paying jobs for Americans.
Federal loan guarantees, approved by Congress, are vital to building new nuclear power plants. The loan guarantee program is an incentive program established in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Along with loan guarantees, the nuclear industry strongly supports protecting the Davis-Bacon Act. It is in the nation’s best interest to keep Davis-Bacon and the loan guarantee program together as we lobby our elected representatives to support nuclear power.
Some talking points for contacting your elected representatives regarding labor union support for the nuclear power industry include:
• It is in the constituents’ and nation’s best interest to support the highly trained work force that is committed to the safety, construction, operation and maintenance of nuclear facilities.
• The loan guarantee program and Davis-Bacon are important components to supporting the nation’s nuclear renaissance.
• Without congressional support for nuclear construction projects, the nation loses opportunities to benefit from thousands of American jobs that realize critical economic gains for the entire country and move the United States toward energy independence.
Together, labor unions and the nuclear power industry can make our nation’s future brighter.
